Soap making the old fashioned way using Sodium Hydroxide can be rather intimidating. However, if you use melt and pour Glycerin Soap, you can easily make your own custom soaps! You can melt Glycerin Soap in either the microwave or a double boiler. Simply melt the soap, add color and fragrance, stir and pour into a mold. To speed up the setting time, put it in the freezer.
To melt in microwave: Slice soap into 1/8" strips. Place soap and thin shavings of color chips in Pyrex beaker and microwave for approximately 45 seconds to 1 minute, depending on the amount of soap. Remove and stir lightly, continue to microwave at 15-second intervals until melted. If soap is overheated, it may discolor. The color will lighten once the soap has cooled. Add desired fragrance pour soap as soon as fragrance is added. Pour soap into your mold, let cool and harden before removing from mold. For fast set, allow soap to cool for 1 minute then cover with plastic wrap and seal. Place in either the refrigerator or the freezer for approximately 10 minutes.
Double Boiler: Follow the same instructions as for the microwave and adjust the heat to keep the soap at a constant liquid point. Do not leave soap heated for more than 10 minutes.
Body Scrubs: Make your own textured soaps that will gently remove dead skin leave your skin feeling soft, clean and healthy. Add natural ingredients such as: finely ground almonds, finely ground coconut, ground walnut, toasted oatmeal, finely ground wheat germ or pumice. Add corresponding fragrances.
Double Sided Soaps: Pour one side of one variety of soap and allow it to cool and harden. Once hardened remove the soap half and trim so that the soap lays flat. Next melt more soap and pour another half of another variety. Immediately set the hardened half into the liquid half, lightly press soap into the liquid soap causing a small excess of liquid soap to escape.
Marbleized Soap: Simply make two different colored bars of soap. Allow bars to cool. Shave thin strips of both colored bars, mix shavings. Melt more uncolored soap, add colored shavings and pour. Do not mix.
Liquid Soap Recipe
2000ml (2 quarts)
Warm water, add Ligel as it cools off. Water will start to thicken. As it does, add the soap base. Mix well. Add any additive you wish, such as glitter, grain products or powdered flower petals. When adding any of these, you must add a preservative to prevent molding. As the mixtures cools, add color and fragrance, if desired.
